Lujosa producción de Samuel Bronston, espectacular empleo de los escenarios por parte de Mann (con brillante fotografía de Robert Krasker), épica partitura de Miklos Rozsa y buenas actuaciones en general (Sofia Loren en todo su esplendor físico incorporando a Jimena y el gran Charlton Heston de nuevo bordando un papel homérico) para este recorrido sobre la vida y obra de Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, en el cual se abordan temas como la lealtad, la ambición, el amor, la codicia o la honestidad.

Anthony Mann's rousing epic finally makes it to Blu-Ray, where all 70mm films belong. The transfer is very true to the European Rank Print used for the most recent restoration, far surpassing the clarity of the standard dvd. The color timing of the Rank prints seems less saturated than the IB prints of the original MGM Theatrical exhibition in the US, but very filmlike nonetheless. The Blu-ray DTS soundtrack has more fidelity than the standard dvd Dolby track (the same source stems are used), particularly noticeable during the storm sequence and with the organ notes at the finale. Miklos Rozsa's stupendous score is one of the true highlights of the picture.
In any event, Blu-Ray is the way to go with this epic. Sadly, this Koch Blu-Ray is coded only for Region B, so a multi-region player will be needed for watching outside of Europe. There's no word on when this will be released in high-definition for Region A players.
The film is presented on a single disc with instantaneous startup, not even a main menu stop, the way it should be. German is the language option so the audio switch to English needs to be made during the Overture. There are no subtitle options. A digital copy disc (anathema for a film of this type, and a useless option for film buffs in general) is included in the package, along with a standard disc of bonus features (the same extras as on the Miriam release in the US).

También obtuvo un éxito significativo en el género del western durante su etapa en los Estudios Universal, sobre todo en un ciclo de colaboraciones con James Stewart: Winchester '73, Horizontes lejanos, The Naked Spur, The Far Country, El hombre de Laramie y El hombre del oeste, con Gary Cooper, considerada por muchos críticos su obra maestra.
