Lifeboat (1944) Blu-Ray USA - Director: Alfred Hitchcock

Eureka Entertainment today announced its forthcoming releases for the months of April, May and June 2012. There will be seven new releases added to the Masters of Cinema series (DOUBLE INDEMNITY, THE LOST WEEKEND, LIFEBOAT, ISLAND OF LOST SOULS, RUGGLES OF RED GAP, SANSHO DAYU and UGETSU MONOGATARI) as well as one non-Masters of Cinema release, namely Takashi Miike’s YATTERMAN. Eureka also continues its ongoing association with Bounty Films with the release of Yamaguchi’s DEADBALL.
Curator, Founder and Production Director of the Masters of Cinema, Nick Wrigley says "We're very excited to finally be welcoming British legend Alfred Hitchcock into the Masters of Cinema Series. He made LIFEBOAT during WW2, his only film for Fox, and the same year he made two shorter films for the war effort - BON VOYAGE and AVENTURE MALGACHE - both collected here, in new HD restorations as a sumptuous Dual Format special edition.

SPELLBOUND (1945)

SINOPSIS: A la clínica psiquiátrica de Green Manors llega el joven y prestigioso doctor Edwards (Gregory Peck) para sustituir al anciano director. El recién llegado, nada más incorporarse, es mirado con recelo por los demás médicos, ya que descubren en él síntomas evidentes de amnesia y un gran complejo de culpabilidad. Edwards cree que es culpable de un asesinato, pero no consigue recordar ni las circunstancias que rodearon al crimen ni el lugar donde se cometió. La bella y fría doctora Constance Peterson (Ingrid Bergman) enamorada de él, tratará desesperadamente de demostrar su inocencia arriesgando su prestigio profesional e incluso, su propia vida...
Recuerda (1945) es una aproximación de Alfred Hitchcock al mundo del psicoanálisis freudiano. Entre las escenas más recordadas de esta película destaca una surrealista secuencia onírica, diseñada para Hitchcock por Salvador Dalí.

- Commentary with Film Historians Thomas Schatz and Charles Ramirez Berg. While nowhere near as scholarly as Marian Keane's commentary on the Criterion release of Spellbound, Schatz and Berg, while chatty (and with a tendency to talk over each other, making each a jumble) do impart quite a bit of information on the film's background and production. However, how seriously can you take two guys who question whether Rozsa's score is "too big" for the film, and who also misidentify the film Norman Lloyd falls off the Statue of Liberty in (it's Saboteur, not Sabotage, guys).
- Running With Scissors: Hitchcock, Surrealism and Salvador Dali (SD; 21:25) is an interesting, albeit surface deep, look at this iconic pairing, including information on how it came to be as well as how Selznick deemed the dream sequences unfit for exhibition and had them edited.
- Guilt By Association: Psychoanalyzing Spellbound (SD; 19:39) looks at the film's historic place as the first mainstream film to deal with psychoanalysis, something that may have been in people's minds (no pun intended) as World War II was winding down, and soldiers were coming home in droves who were dealing with emotional problems.
- A Cinderella Story: Rhonda Fleming (SD; 10:10) is a profile of the auburn tressed star.

- Commentary with Film Professor Rick Jewell. This is a really interesting commentary, though it doesn't hew to the usual fare. Instead of concentrating on the film at hand, Jewell spends roughly the first half or so of the commentary giving us the history of RKO and then Selznick's involvement with the project, before ultimately moving on to the movie at hand.
- Commentary with Film Professor Drew Casper. I'm sorry, I'm sure Dr. Casper is a very nice and very learned man, but I simply loathe his commentaries. Aside from his voice, which grates on my nerves like fingernails on a blackboard, with its "loose dentures" sound, Casper is just too chatty, too colloquial and too obvious for my particular tastes. (Example: "Ingrid Bergman was a star!") Your mileage may vary.
- Isolated Music and Effects Track. Notorious' score isn't usually held in the same high esteem as some of the other Hitchcock films (particularly those scored by Bernard Herrmann), but this track makes clear just how effective Roy Webb's contributions really were to the film.
- The Ultimate Romance: The Making of Notorious (SD; 28:22) is a decent look at the film, concentrating on the romantic angle as a unifying focus.
- Alfred Hitchcock: The Ultimate Spymaster (SD; 13:10) is a nice look at how Hitchcock's efforts such as Notorious have influenced the whole spy and espionage genre in film generally.
- The American Film Institute Award: The Key to Hitchcock (SD; 3:20) features Mary Stone, Hitch's granddaughter introducing snippets of footage from Hitch's AFI Lifetime Achieement Award, which includes an incredibly touching moment of Ingrid Bergman bestowing the iconic key from Notorious on Hitch.

Titanic / El hundimiento del Titanic (1953) Blu-Ray UK - Con: Barbara Stanwyck - Director: Jean Negulesco

Sinopsis: Relato del hundimiento del famoso trasatlántico británico Titanic, ocurrido en 1912. Ganador del Oscar al mejor argumento, el film se centra más en el desarrollo dramático de los personajes -a través de la historia de una matrimonio adinerado pero infeliz que embarca en el barco- que en la acción y aventura. Obtuvo muy buenas críticas.

Análisis y Critica: La película en si es muy buena, inclusive en su momento tuvo muy buenas críticas.
La historia comienza cuando el barco está a punto de zarpar desde Francia. La lucha por la custodia de los hijos en un matrimonio en conflicto hace que quede totalmente a menos tras el drama del naufragio.
Rodean a los personajes, situaciones que hicieron a la historia del barco para que el espectador pueda conocer un poco mas a fondo al Titanic y la tragedia a parte de seguir la historia íntima de los personajes principales.
Éstos son algunos de los momentos que se pueden apreciar en el filme:
* Regalos a la compañía White Star de parte de Astor, Guggenheim y Strauss entre otros.
* En un momento le llega como obsequio al Capitán Smith una extraña bandera usada en otro barco que luego decide izarla en el Titanic. Esto es algo extraño históricamente no se sabe si ocurrió.
* Niño nombra a la empresa Marconi como algo innovador, esto es muy correcto en el filme ya que en aquella época el correo a vapor era totalmente nuevo.
* Chimeneas funcionan correctamente las 3 primeras y la cuarta de ventilación
Mencionan almuerzo de pasajeros junto al capitán como era verdaderamente costumbre en el barco
* Aparece en escena la famosa misa que se dio durante el viaje en primera clase
* Se mencionan los avisos de hielo y como aun así el capitán adopta ir a toda maquina.
* Muchacho tira gorra al agua y cae rodeada de pequeños trozos de hielo que viajaban sobre el mar.
* Según los franceses los británicos anuncian la cena como una carga de caballería
* Se muestra el retraso en recibir avisos del hielo.
* Se puede ver la correcta pequeña inclinación del barco hacia babor durante el hundimiento. Esto es históricamente correcto. Nunca se supo porque el barco adopto esa leve inclinación hacia babor cuando el iceberg pegó en estribor.
* Así como lo dijo el relato de muchos sobrevivientes, en escena se muestra como un hombre sube a un bote vestido de mujer para poder acceder al mismo.
* Aparecen correctamente los radiotelegrafistas actuando hasta último momento.
* La orquesta de la White Star toca en un momento “cerca de ti señor” en los minutos finales del barco. Esto en realidad es un mito ya que alguna teorías mantienen que la orquesta no hubiera tocado una melodía triste en un momento tan dramático cuando en realidad estaba para calmar el estado de animo de los pasajeros.

Curiosidades:
* No se nombra ni aparece en ningún momento el famoso Californian.
* El mayor transcurso de la película se da durante el viaje del barco y menor es el tiempo en el que éste se hunde
* En un momento un personaje pasa de segunda a primer clase con una sorprendente facilidad.
* En varias ocasiones se muestra a un hombre ebrio paseando por todo el barco con total libertad sin ningún impedimento de parte de la seguridad del barco.
* Al avistar el iceberg se puede ver como la maniobra del timón es precisa. Ya que en aquella época cuando al orden era girar a estribor era mover el timón en sentido opuesto.
* Durante el hundimiento se puede ver en un instante una extraña balsa inflable en cubierta. Quizá halla sido un fallido intento de representar un bote plegable.
* Durante el hundimiento de la proa explota misteriosamente una caldera de estribor. Esto es in entendible en la película ya que durante el hundimiento no se detecto ninguna explosión de caldera.
* Se siente una extraña sirena proveniente del barco durante el hundimiento.

Cleopatra es una coproducción cinematográfica de 1963, dirigida por Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Protagonizada por Elizabeth Taylor y Richard Burton en los papeles principales, se hizo tristemente célebre por su exorbitado coste final y los problemas financieros que causó.
Aun siendo destrozada por la critica, en realidad la película fue un éxito de taquilla: fue la de mayor recaudación de 1963 (24 millones de dólares). Pero no fue considerada como una película exitosa, ya que necesitó un año entero para recuperar los 44 millones invertidos. Debido a su desusado coste, es la única película en la historia que ha sido la de mayor recaudación en su año de estreno y aun así ha sufrido problemas de recaudación.

Cleopatra (1963) [EDICIÓN ESPAÑOLA]


TRIVIA:
- La película es negativamente famosa por llevar casi a la quiebra a la productora 20th Century Fox. Originalmente con un presupuesto de 2 millones de dólares, terminó costando 44 millones, lo que convierte a esta película en una de las más caras de la historia. Calculando la inflación hasta 2010, su presupuesto equivaldría a 320 millones de dólares actuales.
- El elevado gasto se produjo en parte debido a la elaboración ostentosa del film, con complicados decorados (que tuvieron que ser construidos dos veces) y con abundante vestuario (la protagonista lucía 65 vestidos), y aumentó enormemente por una interrupción durante el proceso de filmación en Londres y otra cuando la producción se trasladó a Roma.
- La filmación empezó en Londres en 1960. Mankiewicz entró en la producción después de la salida del primer director (Rouben Mamoulian), quien tenía en mente a la actriz afroamericana Dorothy Dandridge para el papel principal. Lo que se había filmado hasta el momento había costado 5 millones de dólares y no era material usable. Esto en parte se debió a que los actores que originalmente se contrataron para interpretar a Julio César (Peter Finch) y a Marco Antonio (Stephen Boyd) dejaron el proyecto debido a otros compromisos. Mankiewicz fue luego despedido durante la fase de montaje, y luego contratado nuevamente cuando nadie pudo juntar todas las partes de la película.
- Elizabeth Taylor había firmado un contrato récord de 1 millón de dólares para interpretar a Cleopatra VII. Esta cantidad luego subió a 7 millones debido a los constantes retrasos de la producción, lo que equivale a un pago aproximado de 47 millones de dólares actuales.
- El montaje final que Mankiewicz presentó al estudio duraba seis horas. Fue recortada a sólo cuatro horas para su premiere original, pero el estudio exigió (contra las objeciones de Mankiewicz) que el filme debería ser recortado una vez más. Esta vez fue una versión de tres horas, para permitir a las salas de cine incrementar el número de las proyecciones diarias de la película.
- La película ha sido lanzada para su reproducción doméstica en distintos formatos de video (DVD, VHS). Estas versiones sólo incluían 243 minutos (4 horas), y aún se siguen realizando esfuerzos por recuperar el material perdido para poder recuperar la película original de 6 horas (de las cuales algunas se han encontrado).
- La última película como director de Mankiewicz fue Sleuth (1972) que tuvo una remake en 2007. Cleopatra era una remake de Cleopatra (1934).
