Metropolis Refound (2010) [trailer] (en Castellano)

El documental narra el recorrido de la copia recientemente encontrada del film Metrópolis desde su llegada a la Argentina en 1928, su hallazgo en el Museo del Cine Pablo Ducrós Hicken de Buenos Aires en 2008 y el regreso a Alemania para su restauración en 2009.
Registrando todos los acontecimientos, lugares y personajes relacionados al mismo, a través de entrevistas a los artífices de este hallazgo; sus testimonios narran los puntos de giro que determinaron la suerte de esta película a lo largo de 80 años.

Metropolis takes place in 2026, when the populace is divided between workers who must live in the dark underground and the rich who enjoy a futuristic city of splendor. The tense balance of these two societies is realized through images that are among the most famous of the 20th century, many of which presage such sci-fi landmarks as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner. Lavish and spectacular, with elaborate sets and modern science fiction style, Metropolis stands today as the crowning achievement of the German silent cinema.
Kino International is proud to announce the DVD and long awaited first time ever Blu-ray release of the new restoration of Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction masterpiece Metropolis, now with 25 minutes of lost footage and the original Gottfried Huppertz score. This new 147-minute version (being released as The Complete Metropolis), opened theatrically in April 2010 earning over $350,000 at the box office, and since it's original restoration, has gone on to earn $1,000,000 in theatrical ticket sales!
When it was first screened in Berlin on January 10, 1927, the sci-fi epic ran an estimated 153 minutes. After its premiere engagement, in an effort to maximize the film's commercial potential, the film's distributors (UFA in Germany, Paramount in the U.S.) drastically shortened Metropolis, which had been a major disappointment at the German box office. By the time it debuted in the United States later that year, the film ran approximately 90 minutes (exact running times are difficult to determine because silent films were not always projected at a standardized speed).
Metropolis went on to become one of the cornerstones of science fiction cinema foreshadowing Blade Runner and The Matrix to name just a few recent examples. Testament to its enduring popularity, the film has undergone restorations in 1984 and again in 1987. The 2001 restoration combined footage from four archives and ran at a triumphant 124 minutes. And at the time was widely believed that this would be the most complete version of Lang's film that contemporary audiences could ever hope to see. But, in the summer of 2008, the curator of the Buenos Aires Museo del Cine discovered a 16mm dupe negative that was considerably longer than any existing print. It included not merely a few additional snippets, but 25 minutes of "lost" footage (about a fifth of the film) that had not been seen since its 1927 debut in Berlin. The discovery of such a significant amount of material called for yet another restoration, carefully executed by Anke Wilkening of the Murnau Stiftung (Foundation) (the German institution that is the caretaker of virtually all pre 1945 German films), Martin Koerber, Film Department Curator of the Deutche Kinemateque and on the music side, by Frank Stoebel. Regarding the quality of the added footage Ms. Wilkening has said: "The work on the restoration teaches us once more that no restoration is ever definitive... Even if we are allowed for the first time to come as close to the first release as ever before, the new version will still remain an approach. The rediscovered sections which change the film's composition, and at the same time always be recognizable through their damages as those parts that had been lost for 80 years."

So, what are the differences? - well, like the DVD editions, Masters of Cinema have recreated the theatrical 'feeling' using the original German intertitles cards - with English subtitle translation optional. I rate this as a huge difference almost akin to a DUB vs. original language audio. Personally, I am put far deeper into the mood and aware of the historical significance of what I am watching. Also the Masters of Cinema subtitle translation is more complete and accurately worded (see our sample below). My Momitsu confirms that the UK disc is region 'B'-locked.
The other ginormous difference is in the extras. The MoC matches the Kino with the never-before-seen 54-minute documentary on the making and restoration of Metropolis entitled The Voyage to Metropolis (Die Reise nach Metropolis) and the 2010 restoration trailer. What we lose is the 10-minute interview with Paula Felix-Didier, curator of the Museo del Cine, in Buenos Aires. BUT what we gain is fabulous - a full-length audio commentary, recorded in March of 2010, by David Kalat (who, generally, handles production history) and Jonathan Rosenbaum (discussing critical perspectives - also impressions from other journalists). They work very well together and discuss the enduring legacy of Lang's Sci-fi classic, revelations contained in the newly found footage, the power of the images and film language utilized by the iconic director among many other details. It's fabulous - fairly low key - but brimming with relevant information. Possibly this is my favorite commentary of the 2010 year. Lastly, included in the package is a magnificent 56-page booklet featuring archival interviews with Fritz Lang, a 1927 review by Luis Buñuel, articles by Jonathan Rosenbaum and Karen Naundorf, and restoration notes by Martin Koerber. Masters of Cinema handily wins in the supplements department.

A veces me olvido que España edita muy bien realmente.
Que vergüenza que habiéndose encontrado el material extra en la Argentina, aquí no exista ni la intención de editarla en Blu-Ray.
Necesitamos más gente como el Sr. José Martinez Suarez (presidente del Festiva de Mar Del Plata) en nuestro mercado del Cine (tanto hogareño como comercial) y menos como los CEO de las editoras locales o los que deciden que películas llegan o no a nuestras salas de cine.
¿ Scott Pilgrim no viene a nuestros cines ? ... ¿ No hay Blu-Ray Argentino de ninguna película nuestra ? ... una enorme vergüenza. Un mercado que solo apunta a ganar plata y quejarse cuando le va mal.
Pero sigamos con los datos de la Edición Española...

Metrópolis se estrenó en Berlín el 10 de enero de 1927 y después de 83 años, el 12 de enero de 2010 volvió a ser ‘estrenada’ con todos los honores en la que se considera la que es su versión definitiva. Tras los cortes y remontajes sufridos por Metrópolis después del estreno, la obra maestra de Fritz Lang fue sometida a tres sustanciales restauraciones, la penúltima de las cuales, finalizada en 2001 tras un arduo proceso de investigación por todas las filmotecas del mundo, supuso para Metrópolis ser escogida como la primera película considerada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco.
De Metrópolis no se conocía ninguna copia íntegra y original. Se conservaba, eso sí, una copia de la partitura original de Gottfried Huppertz para recordar que faltaba algo más de media hora de metraje. Pero en 2008 se materializó un sueño que parecía imposible: En Buenos Aires se localizó una copia en 16 mm del original que, a pesar de su deterioro, conservaba 26 minutos ‘inéditos’ y el montaje de escenas original del estreno. Casi dos años después de ese hallazgo y tras efectuar un minucioso y costoso trabajo de restauración —que incluye la regrabación de la partitura original de Huppertz, interpretada por la Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester de Berlín a las órdenes de Frank Strobel— la ‘nueva’ Metrópolis vuelve a presentarse en toda su visionaria y extraordinaria grandeza que puede disfrutarse, por fin, en Blu-ray.

BILLY WILDER en HD

Samuel Wilder, más conocido como Billy Wilder (1906-2002), fue un director de cine y productor estadounidense de origen austríaco.
En 1934 se trasladó a Estados Unidos, junto al actor Peter Lorre. Wilder y Lorre compartieron apartamento, hambre y momentos muy difíciles durante una temporada. Allí comenzó a trabajar como guionista para la Paramount, y tuvo la ocasión de colaborar con Ernst Lubitsch, su gran maestro. El día de su funeral dijo: "Nos hemos quedado sin Lubitsch. Peor aún, nos hemos quedado sin las películas de Lubitsch".

Como guionista, Wilder escribió 60 películas. Como director, realizó 26 películas. Fue galardonado con 5 premios Óscar tras haber sido nominado en 21 ocasiones.
Cerca del final de su larga y brillante carrera cinematográfica, Billy Wilder se entrevistó con un ejecutivo del estudio que debía financiar uno de sus últimos proyectos. El joven productor tuvo la ignorante osadía de preguntarle: Dígame, Mr. Wilder, ¿qué ha hecho usted en el cine?. Usted primero, le contestó con su sorna habitual el viejo director.
Billy Wilder lo consiguió todo, bueno, casi todo: "Me gustaría morir a los 104 años, completamente sano, asesinado por un marido que me acabara de pillar, in fraganti, con su joven esposa" Billy Wilder.

Wilder rodó películas de todos los géneros, aunque a través de su obra se pueden adivinar algunas constantes: dinero, poder, arribismo, trasvestismo y juego de roles, mentira, traición, cerrazón mental y física, y, sobre todo, prostitución, explícita como en Irma la Douce, o más sutl como en la mayoría del resto de sus obras. Quizás, menos algunas de sus primeras películas y algunas otras de las últimas, creo que todas las restantes podrían formar parte de esas tres que me llevaría a la famosa isla desierta a la que todo el mundo, alguna vez, imagina ir. El proceso educativo por el que pasa Jack Lemmon en Avanti!, la dulzura de Irma la Douce, la cruel vida del dueño de El Apartamento, el ritmo frenético de One, Two, Three; la negritud de Double Indemnity, la carroña de Ace in the Hole, la sensualidad de Marilyn en cualquiera de las dos películas que rodó con él, el triple mortal del final de Witness for the Prosecution... desde luego hay donde elegir, y, aún así y a pesar de los recurrentes temáticas antes mencionadas, el espectador no podrá dejar de encontrarse con sátiras feroces, con el pesimismo, la crueldad y el desencanto de un incisivo director cuya especialidad era el humor negro, a veces sórdido, y molesto.

Avanti! (1972)

Juliet Mills, actriz inglesa hija del gran John Mills, y hermana de Hayley, empezó como actriz infantil junto a actores muy famosos como Rex Harrison, David Niven, o Marlon Brando, de hecho sus padrinos fueron la gran Vivien Leigh y Noel Coward. En esta cinta de Wilder comparte protagonismo con Lemmon quien interpreta a Wendell Armbruster, un hombre de negocios americano que se ve obligado a viajar a Italia, donde su padre ha muerto en un accidente de coche. A pesar de que en el hotel donde se alojaba su padre tratan de ocultárselo, se entera de que tenía una amante que lo acompañaba en el momento del accidente. Cuando entra en escena la hija de la amante (Juliet Mills), la animadversión entre ellos es instantánea, pero la embarazosa situación se complica todavía más cuando los cadáveres desaparecen misteriosamente.

ANÉCDOTA de The Apartment: El director Billy Wilder fue invitado al festival de cine de Berlín Oriental, en plena Guerra Fría, para presentar "El apartamento", a la que los críticos de cine comunistas ponían como ejemplo de "explotación despiadada de los trabajadores por parte del capitalismo". Durante el coloquio que siguió a la proyección del film, Wilder estuvo de acuerdo en que la situación que se plantea en la película "podía darse en Nueva York, Londres o Tokyo, pero jamás en Moscú". El público estalló en sonoros aplausos. Entonces, el sarcástico director austríaco, aclaró que era imposible que sucediese algo semejante en el mundo comunista dado, que el personaje de Jack Lemmon no podría ceder su apartamento a sus jefes ya que tendría que compartirlo con otras tres familias. Según Billy Wilder "hubo un confuso silencio..."

ANÉCDOTA de Some Like It Hot: Marilyn Monroe exigía que su profesora de interpretación, Paula Strassberg, estuviera presente durante el rodaje de sus escenas. Cada vez que terminaban una toma, Marilyn miraba a su profesora y le preguntaba cándidamente "¿Lo he hecho bien, Paula?". Billy Wilder, harto de aquella ridícula situación, decidió cortar por lo sano. Al finalizar la siguiente toma, Wilder se volvió hacia la Strassberg y le preguntó, con voz en falsete, "¿Lo ha hecho bien, Paula?". Se montó tal follón que Paula Strassberg no volvió a aparecer por allí. El problema fue que a Marilyn le dio un ataque de nervios que a punto estuvo de mandar al garete todo el proyecto.
